What is Mentoring Corps?

Mentoring Corps is a new Girls Who Code program launching in the fall of 2023 that aims to support the development of near-peer mentoring relationships by matching high-school-aged Clubs with nearby College Loops to explore coding challenges, college life, and tech careers. College participants will develop their leadership capabilities, receive targeted financial literacy training, and access guidance that will prepare them to succeed in tech-related internships and jobs. Mentoring Corps is designed for participants to join the Mentoring Corps while still having time for their regular Clubs or Loops activities.

Who can participate in Mentoring Corps?

Mentoring Corps participants will be made up of members from GWC High School aged Clubs and College Loops located in Atlanta, Chicago, New York City, and Washington D.C. Mentoring Corps is open to students of selected campuses and Clubs identified by GWC. College Loops members that are a part of Leadership Academy are not eligible for Mentoring Corps.

Can I participate in Mentoring Corps without a Club or a College Loop?

Where will Mentoring Corps take place?

In the 2023-24 school year, Mentoring Corps will take place at selected College Loops and Clubs in Atlanta, Chicago, New York, and Washington, DC.

What can I expect from the Mentoring Corps program?

High school students will be invited by a College Loop in their area to participate in a coding experience in the fall. This can include working on a GWC Challenge, attending a local hackathon, or another coding project dreamed up by the College Loop. In the spring, they’ll be invited to an on-campus visit to learn more about the college experience and pursuing computer science at the next level.

College Loops members will organize the fall coding event and spring campus visit, honing their leadership and project management skills. Additionally, during each semester, they will participate in a speed networking event with GWC corporate partners for more in-depth career exploration and, for the first time ever in a GWC program, will receive financial literacy materials to help plan for their financial future.

When will the Mentoring Corps launch?

The inaugural cohort of the Mentoring Corps will start in August 2023 and conclude in April 2024.

What is the time commitment to participate in Mentoring Corps?

High school Clubs and College Loops will commit to their program to participate in Mentoring Corps for the entire duration of the school year, but individual participants may choose to cycle out of the program after one semester.

For individuals, high school students can expect to spend 1 hour per month on Mentoring Corps activities on top of their existing Clubs participation. College Loop participants will spend approximately 3-4 hours per month on Mentoring Corps responsibilities.

How much does Mentoring Corps cost?

Mentoring Corps is a FREE program for participants! Additionally, College Loops members who complete their responsibilities will be offered a stipend at the end of their tenure.
