Collaboration Aims to Close the Gender Gap in Technology
STAMFORD, CT – February 23, 2022 – HARMAN International, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. focused on connected technologies for automotive, consumer and enterprise markets, today launched a new strategic partnership with Girls Who Code that aims to help close the gender gap in engineering and other technology fields.
The partnership addresses a critical gap in the makeup of technology industry leadership, as men make up approximately 73% of the STEM workforce, while other groups are vastly underrepresented within fields that require science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills.
“HARMAN is a long-time advocate for, and leader in developing educational initiatives, programs, and partnerships that are generating skilled talent for the workforce of tomorrow,” said Nicholas Parrotta, President, Digital Transformation Solutions (DTS) and Chief Digital and Information Officer at HARMAN. “We’re looking forward to working closely with Girls Who Code to continue to fuel a diverse pipeline of leaders for the future and drive meaningful change.”
“At Girls Who Code, we understand that it’s not enough to foster a passion for computer science among girls and young women. We also need to build pathways to ensure that they are given equal access to opportunities that turn their interest into lucrative and exciting careers,” said Tarika Barrett, CEO of Girls Who Code. “HARMAN’s international reach, purpose-driven mindset and dedication to closing the gender gap in STEM fields will enable us to work together to place even more passionate, intelligent and hard-working students in tech jobs around the world.”
The new partnership is part of HARMAN Inspired, HARMAN’s global cause initiative created to prepare the next generation of technology leaders through unique, immersive and meaningful experiences in music, technology and community service. In collaboration with leading nonprofits around the globe, HARMAN Inspired connects young people to diverse opportunities that motivate them to learn and develop skills and interests in pursuit of careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).
HARMAN Inspired has a strong track record of using education and mentorship to drive greater diversity in STEM fields, reach underserved populations and empower and inspire the next generation of diverse STEM leaders. HARMAN collaborates with nonprofit partners like Girls Who Code to promote and fund talented students in unrepresented communities who are pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.
