Girls Who Code Named #1 in Not-For-Profits Among Fast Company’s Annual List of The World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2019

New York, New York (February 20, 2019) – Girls Who Code has been named to Fast Company’s prestigious annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2019. The organization was named #1 on the list among not-for-profits.

The list honors the businesses making the most profound impact on both industry and culture, showcasing a variety of ways to thrive in today’s volatile world. Fast Company announced the list online today. Girls Who Code will be featured in the magazine’s March-April issue, available at newsstands on February 26th.

“This is an amazing milestone at an exciting and critical moment for Girls Who Code – as we take our organization to new heights in the U.S. and around the world,” said founder and CEO Reshma Saujani. “The Most Innovative Companies award is a recognition of our ability to innovate, to be on the cutting edge of our industry – all while staying true to the mission at our core: teaching girls to code. And it’s an honor to be included among such an incredible list of world-class companies and organizations, and we’re grateful to all our partners for their support of our work.”

Girls Who Code is being recognized for three new US-based initiatives aimed at closing the gender gap in tech – expanding their reach to 90,000 girls in all 50 states.

Girls Who Code released Women in Tech Lesson Plans – a free resource for teachers featuring diverse historical and contemporary women pioneers in technology. Whereas most interventions in schools to date have focused on teaching coding or increasing access, this is the first focused on giving young girls role models in tech who look like them.

The organization also launched 3rd-5th grade Clubs, an initiative that introduces computer science to girls at a time when, according to research done in partnership with Accenture, their interest is highest. 3rd-5th grade Clubs feature curriculum drawn from Girls Who Code’s New York Times bestselling books.

And finally, Girls Who Code launched College Loops, a program to build community among alumni, launched in Fall 2019 as an effort to improve retention in computer science at the university level and beyond.

This year, Fast Company’s editors and writers sought out groundbreaking businesses across 35 industries and every region. They also judged nominations received through their application process. The World’s Most Innovative Companies is Fast Company’s signature franchise and one of its most highly anticipated editorial efforts of the year. It provides both a snapshot and a road map for the future of innovation across the most dynamic sectors of the economy.

“Established players are showing the same kind of nimbleness that we’ve generally associated with startups,” said Fast Company deputy editor David Lidsky, who oversaw the issue with senior editor Amy Farley.

Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies issue (March-April 2019) is now available online at https://www.fastcompany.com/MIC, as well as in app form via iTunes and on newsstands beginning February 27th. The hashtag is #fcmostinnovative.
